For the past few years, cities have embarked on their digital transformation to achieve energy efficiency. The development of the Smart City is one of the unavoidable challenges for municipalities and their administration. Ecological, adapted to rapid urban development, hyper-connected, the city of the future must meet numerous challenges to optimize the quality of life for its growing population and address the innovation issues that are essential to becoming a true Smart City.

1. What is the concept of a Smart City?
According to the CNIL, the concept of a Smart City is defined as follows:
The Smart City, or intelligent city, is a new concept of sustainable urban development. It aims to improve the quality of life for city dwellers by making the city more adaptive and efficient, using new technologies that rely on an ecosystem of objects and services. The scope covering this new mode of city management includes public infrastructure (buildings, urban furniture, home automation, etc.), networks (water, electricity, gas, telecoms), transportation (public transport, smart roads and cars, carpooling, soft mobility - biking, walking, etc.), e-services, and e-administrations.
2. The "smart" challenges of the city of the future
The Smart City project was launched to address an undeniable observation: exponential population growth and the rapid urbanization of cities. By 2050, more than 80% of the population will reside in urban areas. This directly impacts the entire community life, the well-being of residents, and the sustainable exploitation of resources. It is therefore urgent to provide a concrete solution to preserve and optimize our precious resources and address the already significant challenges of urban mobility, water and waste treatment, energy efficiency, and housing.
3. Smart City or the improvement of urban quality of life on a large scale
Some cities in Europe and around the world have already begun their digital transition, each proposing innovative solutions according to their culture and needs, leading to a concrete improvement in the quality of life for their residents.
Examples include Singapore's Supertrees, a successful integration of green technologies in urban environments, Barcelona's advanced infrastructure, Hong Kong's intelligent mobility, and the digitalization of public services in Lyon. These examples prove that the adoption of the Smart City project can take various forms, but it inevitably involves the integration of new technologies, the opening of data (open data), and the use of innovation-supporting management software.
4. Data management at the heart of the "smart" revolution
As the true engine of the Smart City, data forms the foundation of the intelligent city of tomorrow.
The collection, intersection, and exploitation of data related to infrastructure, services, and city management will enable the most intelligent and sustainable urban planning. It is essential for local authorities to access and process this data to design intelligent services. This becomes possible through the use of project management software specifically dedicated to local authorities, transforming this data into raw material for innovation.

5. Zoom sur quelques enjeux d'une "Smart City"
2021 : l’arrivée du véhicule autonomeLa révolution de la mobilité urbaine tant espérée se fera grâce à l’innovation. Et le gouvernement français l’a bien compris en donnant le feu vert aux expérimentations sur route des véhicules autonomes dès 2019 pour une commercialisation normalement prévue dès 2021. Mais un véhicule autonome, c’est quoi exactement ? Il en existe deux sortes. La première est un véhicule sans chauffeur, doté d’un système de géolocalisation ultra perfectionné et capable, grâce aux données collectées pendant la conduite, d’adapter la trajectoire du véhicule en fonction des obstacles mouvants. Ils pourraient, à terme, remplacer la conduite humaine. |

Avec la création d’un cadre législatif pour les expérimentations en milieu ouvert des véhicules sans conducteur, le gouvernement français donne le champ libre aux industriels pour initier une véritable révolution en matière de mobilité urbaine. |

La seconde a trait aux véhicules énergétiquement autonomes, c’est-à-dire capables de se recharger en roulant par exemple. On peut citer la voiturette d’Ecclectic, la première voiture entièrement autonome de l’histoire qui se recharge à l’aide de panneaux solaires. Les constructeurs automobiles présentent ce type de véhicule comme la prochaine révolution de l’automobile et ils ont obtenu le soutien des autorités pour faire face à leurs concurrents chinois et américains.
La révolution des produits et des services intelligents
Face à ces nouvelles ambitions, on voit émerger de nouveaux produits et services spécialement conçus pour répondre aux nouvelles demandes propres à la mobilité urbaine. Parmi eux, les services de co-voiturage et d’autopartage qui fleurissent dans les villes. Des solutions idéales pour les déplacements urbains et qui permettent, dans le même temps, d’encourager les citoyens à abandonner leur véhicule personnel. On notera par exemple le service de co-voiturage d’ENGIE, Co-Move, la solution d’autopartage de Renault Mobility, les vélos en libre-service d’Ofo ou encore les scooters électriques d’UJET. Mais les projets les plus innovants sont ceux qui font appel à un capital technologique beaucoup plus perfectionné et qui offrent des possibilités de déplacement dignes d’un film d’anticipation. À en croire la firme allemande Volocopter, il sera bientôt possible de se déplacer d’un point A à un point B en utilisant un taxi volant électrique de petite taille, capable d’embarquer deux personnes pour un voyage dans les airs jusqu’à la destination choisie. Le drone taxi est déjà en phase de test et l’entreprise a déjà des concurrents chevronnés comme Airbus et Uber Technologies Inc. qui ont pour projet de développer leurs propres taxis volants. La fameuse entreprise de VTC, Uber, prévoit même le déploiement de ses taxis électriques volants à Dallas-Fort Worth et Dubaï d’ici 2020 !
Et les villes dans tout ça ?
Les villes, bien évidemment, semblent résolues à ne pas manquer le coche non plus.
On prendra notamment l’exemple d’Helsinki, la première métropole à avoir mis en place une offre de « Mobility as a service » (Maas) qui rassemble tous les moyens de transport accessibles aux citadins dans une seule offre illimitée. Ainsi, les habitants bénéficient d’un accès à volonté aux métros, bus de ville, taxis, vélos, VTC, loueurs de voitures, voitures libre-service… de leur ville quand ils le souhaitent. Une solution qui semble faire des émules et qui offre au citoyen la possibilité de disposer du meilleur moyen de transport pour se rendre n’importe où et à n’importe quel moment.
